Der Ackerschachtelhalm gehört zu den ältesten Pflanzen der Geschichte und bedeckte vor etwa 350 Millionen Jahren, zusammen mit Farnen, riesige Wälder. Er wurde bereits im Altertum in der Heilkunde als Lieferant von Kieselsäure geschätzt. Dioskurides, der berühmteste griechische Pharmakologe der Antike, lobte seine blutstillende Kraft und Sebastian Kneipp setzte ihn zur Behandlung von Störungen bei der Wundheilung und gegen Rheuma und Gicht ein.
Der Extrakt aus dem Ackerschachtelhalm findet wegen seines hohen Kieselsäuregehalts auch in der Kosmetik Verwendung. Er kann das Bindegewebe stärken, Durchblutung und Stoffwechsel fördern und außerdem einen abschwellenden und immunstimulierenden Effekt haben.
