What is PHA?
Anyone who thinks that chemical peels are not for sensitive skin is wrong! PHAs are gentle on the skin without any loss of effectiveness. It's as simple as that!
PHAs (polyhydroxy acids) are a group of acids that includes lactobionic acid and gluconolactone. Both PHA types can be used in combination or on their own as components of a chemical peel. However, they do differ in their effects to some extent. Incidentally, PHAs also function as antioxidants that protect the skin from free radicals and oxidative stress. They also stimulate skin renewal. Perfect for preventing premature skin aging.
PHA Benefits:
5 reasons why PHA exfoliants have won us over:
1. PHA exfoliants are particularly gentle
2. No tingling or burning sensation
3. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties
4. Do not strip the skin of moisture
5. Hydrate the skin
PHA types
Lactobionic acid
- Helps diminish sun-induced hyperpigmentation (i.e. dark spots)
- Prevents premature skin aging
- Neutralizes free radicals
- Anti-aging effect
- Binds water to help skin maintain hydration levels
Gluconolactone
- Improves skin barrier function
- Reduces irritation and redness
- Gentle on the skin, but still an excellent exfoliating effect
- Dissolves dead skin cells; keratolytic action
Who is PHA suitable for?

Compared to AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta hydroxy acids), PHAs have a larger molecular size. Due to their high molecular weight, exfoliants with PHAs act on the surface of the skin, which offers very gentle exfoliation for sensitive skin and avoids irritation. It also forms a thin film on the skin after application. These properties make products with PHAs particularly beneficial for sensitive skin.

How to use
Before using a product with PHA for the first time, we recommend that you always test it on very sensitive areas of skin, such as the hollow of your arm, to rule out reactions.
Always apply exfoliants in the evening so that the skin can regenerate overnight. Only use on clean skin and finish with skincare products suitable for your skin type. Protect your skin from the sun the next day and use sunscreen (at least SPF 30). Never exfoliate on an open wound or cut.
Is it a leave-on or rinse-off product? Some products need to stay on the skin. Others, however, should be washed off.
Always follow the safety instructions. We recommend not using highly concentrated PHA products while pregnant or breastfeeding. If in doubt, always discuss the ingredients with a doctor.
Caution: Do not combine PHA with niacinamide or vitamin B3 at the same time of day. However, you can alternate between the ingredients without any problems, which can be very effective.
