Shea butter is extracted from the seeds of the African shea or karité tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), which is found only in the sub-Sahel zone. Its elliptical, greenish berries are about 6 cm long, with a diameter of 4.5 cm. They contain a sweet fruit pulp that surrounds the seeds.
The evergreen mango tree belongs to the sumac family (Anacardiaceae). It grows up to 15 meters high. Its fruit hangs from the tree on long, thin stems and can weigh up to 2 kg.
Cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum) is a rainforest tree that grows about 20 meters high. Its fruit is about the size of a cantaloupe and ripens in the rainy months from January to April.
