Newcomer? More Like a Veteran!

Admittedly, it’s not quite true that niacinamide is a new emerging innovation. Let’s rather call it the comeback of an active ingredient that can finally show off its immense talent. Because to be honest, niacinamide is not really all that new. Many may know it as vitamin B3, which has been used as a skincare ingredient for quite some time. However, new scientific findings are only now showing what great cosmetic properties niacinamide has to offer. Its positive qualities and highly versatile, wide range of applications in skincare were largely unexplored for a long time.

Why do we need vitamin B3?

We need vitamins because they are part of vital processes in our body. For example, vitamins play a role in blood formation and they help to strengthen the immune system. Unfortunately, vitamins cannot be made by the body, so we have to supply them through our diet. Fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamin A) can be stored in the body for longer periods of time. However, B vitamins and vitamin C are water-soluble vitamins, which means that they cannot be stored in the body. Yet B vitamins are essential for the metabolism and supplying our cells with energy. That is why a deficiency in B vitamins can result in symptoms of exhaustion and fatigue.

Vitamin B3 (also known as niacin) also has a positive effect on our skin. Due to its brightening properties, vitamin B3 can help to even out redness and hyperpigmentation, for example.

Did you know?

Niacin, nicotinamide or vitamin B3? With so many different names, it’s easy to get confused. So here is the in-a-nutshell version: Nicotinamide is an amide (chemical compound) of nicotinic acid, which the body then converts to niacin.

What Are the Benefits of Niacinamide for Skin?

Niacinamide is a fantastic all-rounder in skincare products. It is especially well-known for its brightening properties that promote a balanced and even skin tone and reduce the look of redness, dark spots and dark circles under the eyes. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-acne properties and helps to strengthen our skin barrier. Niacinamide products are great for both dry skin and oily skin, as they can help to control sebum production as well as prevent water loss.
