Spirulina
Spirulina maxima, Spirulina platensis
Spirulina is a genus of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and occurs in alkaline lakes (pH 9-11). It is native to Central America, Africa, Australia and Southeast Asia and can primarily be found in shallow waters with high salinity.
In addition to its use as a food supplement, spirulina has many cosmetic benefits.
Spirulina is recommended as a supplement during detox or weight loss programmes. It can have a mood-enhancing effect, counteract symptoms of fatigue and it contains iron and important antioxidants such as vitamins E, B1 and B12. Additionally, it is rich in proteins and essential amino acids and has a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Thanks to this unique nutritional composition, spirulina can regulate cellular energy and promote cell renewal.
