Polysaccharides
Help the skin retain moisture
Polysaccharides (complex sugars) are large molecules made of many smaller monosaccharides (simple sugars). Natural polysaccharides are for example cellulose, starch and chitin. They play an important role for plants, animals and, of course, humans as energy storage and food in the form of carbohydrates.
When brought into contact with skin, the polysaccharide chains from a molecular film via hydrogen bonds. This provides strong moisturizing properties for the skin on the one hand and reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) on the other hand. The light “film“ promotes a silky-soft feeling as well as a visibly smoother skin surface.
